Bonilla Bergen County

Bergen County towns / South Bergen

Rutherford

Rutherford has the shortest train ride to New York City of any town in Bergen County and a downtown of Victorian buildings to come home to. For a certain buyer — one who wants urban texture without urban prices — it is the most undervalued town in the county.

Part of the county

Victorian housing stock, a walkable Park Avenue, Felician's campus, and the shortest train ride to Manhattan in Bergen County.

What you are buying

Substantial Victorian and Queen Anne housing stock, particularly on Ridge Road and the streets around it, alongside 1920s colonials and a stock of two-families. Lots are small and the street grid is tight, which makes the whole borough genuinely walkable.

Getting to Manhattan

Rutherford station serves both the Main Line and the Bergen County Line into Hoboken, at roughly twenty-five minutes — then PATH or ferry. It is the fastest rail commute in the county by a clear margin.

Schools

Rutherford Public Schools runs four elementary schools, a middle school and Rutherford High School, serving the borough alone rather than as part of a regional district.

Where people actually go

Park Avenue is the commercial spine, with a long-standing restaurant row. Felician University's campus sits in the middle of town. The Meadowlands Environment Center and the Richard W. DeKorte Park trails are ten minutes south. William Carlos Williams practised medicine here for forty years.

Who Rutherford suits

Commuters who want to be on a train for twenty-five minutes, and buyers who want architectural character rather than a split-level.
