Ridgewood
Ridgewood is the town other Bergen County towns get compared to, and it earns it in a specific way: you can live here without driving. The station sits at the bottom of a downtown with something like two hundred businesses in it, the high school is a ten-minute walk from most of the village, and the whole thing is four square miles.
The benchmark. A downtown of two hundred shops and restaurants, a nationally ranked high school, and a station that puts you at Hoboken or Penn without a car.
What you are buying
Center-hall colonials from the 1920s and 30s make up the spine of the market, concentrated in the Village and Willard neighbourhoods. East Ridgewood has larger and newer builds; the streets west of the tracks toward Glen Rock run smaller and more attainable. Teardown-and-rebuild activity is constant, so a street can hold a 1926 colonial and a 2023 farmhouse side by side.
Getting to Manhattan
Two lines converge at Ridgewood station — the Main Line and the Bergen County Line — which in practice means more departures than almost anywhere else in the county. Bergen County Line trains run direct to Hoboken with a PATH connection; Main Line trains connect at Secaucus for Penn Station. Peak trips run roughly an hour door to platform.
Schools
Ridgewood Public Schools runs six elementary schools, two middle schools and Ridgewood High School. The district is the most common single reason buyers give for choosing the town, and it is priced into every listing here — expect to pay a premium over neighbouring Glen Rock or Waldwick for comparable square footage.
Where people actually go
Van Neste Square anchors the downtown and hosts the summer concert series. The Saturday farmers market runs from the train station lot. Graydon Pool is a sand-bottomed swimming hole rather than a chlorinated rectangle, which residents defend fiercely. The Celery Farm nature preserve is fifteen minutes north in Allendale.

Families who want to trade square footage for walkability, and commuters who want optionality on the train schedule rather than a single line.
